Citizens: EcoLogic Studio

EcoLogic Studio, Claudia Pasquero & Marco Poletto, are London and Innsbruck based bio-design innovators. They find new ways of integrating nature in the urban realm and everyday life. EcoLogic Studio have developed a particular interest in the urban microbiome working with microalgae, mosses, fungi and slime molds.

What is the best thing that happened to you today?

M: Receiving confirmation that our first large-scale bio-painting made by growing slime mold on canvas made it into the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou.

How did you meet?

C: At the exams board in the university in Turin, more than 20 years ago. I was a pink-haired punk and Marco a Lycra-clad mountain biking fanatic. No one would have guessed what happened next.

Why did you decide to found ecoLogicStudio?

C: After reading Gregory Bateson’s “Steps towards an ecology of mind”. We felt there was a need for a bio-design innovation agency. One that would focus on combining scientific logical thinking with hands-on artistic practice.

What are your top 3 current inspirations?

M: Algae-based invitro meat, Algae bioplastic 3D printing, Algae biotextiles and clothing.

There is an Afterlife.
What becomes of your sneakers?
Our goal

Our goal is to offer total sustainability throughout the product lifecycle, from design and production through end-of-life. By sourcing renewable materials and recycling them, we can target an environmental impact of zero or better.

Recycling program

Afterlife is the Roscomar recycling program. We offer free end-of-life returns which means that we can take your old Roscomars and reincarnate them into something new so they don't end up in landfill or incineration, which is the fate of 85%+ of shoes globally.

Global leaders

We work with global leaders in textile and footwear recycling. We disassemble the components of each sneaker and recycle that which can be recycled, such as rubber. Natural materials such as leather, suede and cotton, are composted or reprocessed to make new materials.
